“Follow me” -Jesus
‘My Father is always working, and so am I.” – John 5:17
To accept this invitation and follow Jesus is a life changing decision. It means leaving where you are and going with Jesus. The invitation itself reveals a Savior on the move. A God on a mission…a God at work…a God with a purpose. The heart of the call to follow implies that the speaker is in motion and it requires motion from the recipient if accepted. No one says “follow me” if they are not moving and no one says “I will” and stays in the same place.
If you are satisfied with where you are now this call to “follow” Jesus is just an annoyance. It is too much trouble and requires too much effort. You are content to stay where you are and you have no interest in doing anything that will rock the boat. TRUTH: He wants you to experience more than what you are experiencing now. He wants you to do more than live. He wants you to live abundantly! (John 10:10)
If you are afraid of the unknown and getting out of your comfort zone than this invitation to “follow” causes you to circle the wagons throw up some excuses about not being ready or worried about being hurt or being taken down the wrong road. TRUTH: He is the Good Shepherd (John 10:11-18)
If you are skeptical this word from the Savior sounds too good to be true. “I don’t have enough information”. “I need to know what your plan is, Jesus, before I buy into this”. TRUTH: He leads you beside the quiet waters. He refreshes your soul and will guide you along the right paths (Psalm 23;2,3)
If you are going to follow Jesus you will have to do more than trust Him…you will have trust Him enough to get out of the boat,,,leave the tax table…”burn the ships”…you will have to move from where you are now to where He leads you. Where? Not sure, but you should still follow. Will it be what you expect? Probably not. Some of the places we follow Jesus are not pleasant. Some are even painful. But, they are for our good and His glory.
This Jesus who calls you to follow is more interested in your character than your comfort or convenience. Some of the places you will follow Him will challenge you, change you and drive you too follow closer. Sometimes life gets dark and following is reaching out and simply grabbing the hem of His garment and holding on for dear life! But, don’t let a fear of the unknown keep you in the boat. Do not stay where you are as Jesus walks ahead. Call to Him, “Jesus, wait for me, I want to come. I will follow.
