“As Jesus was walking by the Sea Of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. ‘Come follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will make you fishers of men.’ At once they left their nets and followed Him.”
– Matthew 4:18-20
“Follow Me”. Simple words that carry a lot of meaning. It is an invitation…an invitation to something new. They are words that we hear frequently from Jesus as He invited the disciples to become all they were created to be. Jesus used these words when describing the essential steps to discipleship in Luke 9:23 when He said;
“If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”
It is worth noting that Jesus connected this radical call to what Peter and Andrew were doing at the time…fishing. In other words, Jesus was inviting these two fishermen to do what they were wired to do…be fishermen! Jesus is saying that following Him is doing what you were designed to do, but doing it for the Kingdom and for His glory. If you are a teacher, following Jesus means He will make you a teacher for the Kingdom. If you are an electrician, you can be an electrician for the Kingdom. The Apostle Paul said;
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” -1 Corinthians 10:31
I believe that Jesus issues this same invitation to you and I today. It is as fresh as the morning frost. It is as clear as a cloudless sky. “Follow Me”. “Live for my glory.” “Fulfill your purpose.” Have you heard His voice? I assure you that you are on the guest list as Jesus seeks those He loves. He is standing at the shoreline of your work, your school, your home…your life and He is inviting you to come. He is inviting you to a fresh start, a new beginning, an abundant life. He is saying to you…”Follow me”.
